Melbourne Data Centre Launch

Role: 3D & 2D Animation, Creative Direction, Concept Development.

Evolved were commissioned to deliver the Melbourne instalment of a global animation series supporting Google Cloud data centre launches. The scope included developing the key visual for the event, producing a short opening hype animation to set the tone and build anticipation, and creating the presentation designs used by keynote speakers.

Within the compact map, we layered in recognisable Australian and Melbournian details to ground the piece locally. Green areas represent national parks, while the silos reference those scattered across the state, helping create a simple but distinctly Victorian visual identity. We collaborated closely with Indigenous Australian design consultancy CampfireX to ensure the landscape respectfully acknowledged the Traditional Owners of the land.

Country was represented using traditional colour palettes, tribal names, and totems placed within their regions, with soft gradients used to reflect the natural overlap between lands rather than fixed borders. The animation followed a stylised paper cut-out, low poly aesthetic, with a crane and server as the only mandatory elements, symbolising the building of the data centre.

I used this project as a chance to dive into a personal exploration and work without a strict plan. The aim was to stay loosely aligned with the order, rhythm, and pacing of the original titles, while designing each shot around a character and a visual idea that symbolised who they are, focusing on mood and suggestion rather than literal storytelling.

The process stayed loose and experimental. I moved quickly, trusted my gut, and let ideas evolve naturally until they felt right, embracing happy accidents along the way.

Once the shots felt solid in 3D, I pushed them further in the comping phase, using render passes in new ways to refine the final look and bring everything together into a polished result.
